Individual Classes: Introduction to Drawing

4 weeks | 2 hour sessions

Cost: $240

 

 

This 6 week course teaches the first time and beginning artist the fundamental principles of drawing. This individual based class is loaded with "hands on" demonstrations, "tricks of the trade" techniques and in-depth "real life" experiences of being a professional artist! Working with pencils and charcoals; the artist learns the basics of how to use line, shape, form, value and perspective. Experience “drawing what you see” by developing an understanding of how to see as an artist. Learn the proper use of various drawing materials and explore the different types of drawing papers. You will work from a variety of still life subjects and photographs.

Weekly Schedule Outline:

Week 1 -
Introduction to drawing materials. Sketching techniques and croquis drawing. Line drawing exercises. Proportions and measuring techniques.

Week 2 -
The principles of form and shapes, light and shade. Introduction to charcoal drawing.

 

Week 3 -
Tonal drawing techniques. Tonal drawing with charcoals. "Old Masters" drawing techniques - toned paper exercise.


Week 4 -
Expressionistic drawing from photos or life. Long study “final” drawing.

 

Supplies List Included:
  • Graphite pencils – 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B

  • Charcoal pencils- B, 2B, 4B, 6B, white pencil

  • Sandpaper block

  • Stumps, tortillions and Chamois

  • willow charcoal and vine charcoal

  • Pencil sharpener

  • Kneaded and vinyl erasers
     

Supplies List Needed:
  • 18”x24” Newsprint pad

  • 11”x17” Strathmore drawing paper 400 series

  • 3 sheets toned Canson paper
     

NOTE: If you have existing supplies, they may be acceptable. For questions, please contact Mark. Please bring at least three 8” x 10” color printed photographs or laptop images of your chosen subject matter. Images on cell phones are not recommended.
