Gouache with Pastels Classes | Perkins Center for the Arts

This 5 week class will introduce how gouache and pastels make a great combination! Learn to use gouache as an underpainting and apply pastel as your top layer. This mixed-media painting technique is loaded with color and vitality! Come and explore concepts of color theory and composition guidelines depending on your level of artistry. A great introduction to how to use color. Basic and "high end" professional artist materials will be introduced and demonstrated.

 

Topic Highlights:

• Gouache and pastel basics. The different types of brands. Pencils vs. sticks.

• Discussions on color basics to advanced.

• The "underpainting process".

• Introduction to base textures.

• Make it "POP" with pastels on top!

• How to protect your masterpiece.
   

Weekly Schedule Outline:

Week 1 -    

Introduction to your mediums... gouache, pastels and gesso. How the process works.

Discussion on color. Begin 1st paint study... the underpainting. Hands on demonstration.

Week 2 -

Continue the underpainting. Applying pastels. Hands on demonstration.

Week 3 -

Continue with underpainting and pastel combination. Complete 1st paint study.

Week 4 -

Begin final paint study. Your choice of subject matter. Revisit underpainting options for final painting.

Week 5 -

Complete final paint study. Hands on demonstrations. How to protect your masterpiece.

 

Supplies List:

• Cold press illustration board (2)

• Graphite pencil

• Pencil sharpener

• Vinyl and kneaded eraser

• Gouache paint set

• Pastel set

• Watercolor or acrylic brushes - #2, 4, 6 shader. #10 filbert brush
   

NOTE: If you have existing supplies, they may be acceptable. For questions, please contact your instructor. Please bring at least three 8” x 10” color printed photographs or laptop images of your chosen subject matter. Images on cell phones are not recommended.
