Introduction to Drawing | Perkins Center for the Arts

5 weeks | 3 hour sessions

Members: $100; Non-Members $120

Thursdays, 7pm - 10pm | Sept. 26th - Oct. 24th

 

This 5 week class teaches first time and beginning artists the fundamental principles of drawing. It is loaded with "hands on" demonstrations and "tricks of the trade" techniques! Working with pencils and charcoals; artists learn the basics of how to use line, shape, form, value and perspective. Experience “drawing what you see” by developing an understanding of how to see as an artist. Learn the proper use of various drawing materials and explore the different types of drawing papers. The class works from a variety of still life subjects and photographs.

  • Tonal drawing - Principles of light and shade (Chiaroscuro)

  • Expressionistic vs. realistic drawing

Weekly Schedule Outline:

Week 1 -
Introduction to drawing materials. Sketching techniques and croquis drawing. Line drawing
exercises. Proportions and measuring techniques.

Week 2 -
Introduction to drawing materials continued. The principles of forms and shapes. Introduction to charcoal drawing.

 

Week 3 -
Introduction to drawing materials continued. The principles of light and shade on forms and shapes. Tonal drawing techniques. Tonal drawing with charcoals.


Week 4 -
Drawing from observation. "Old Masters" drawing techniques - toned paper
exercise.

Week 5 -

Expressionistic drawing from photos or life. Long study “final” drawing.

  • Graphite pencils – 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B

  •  Charcoal pencils- B, 2B, 4B, 6B, white pencil

  • Sandpaper block

  • Variety pack- Stumps

  • Variety pack- Tortillions

  • 1 Chamois

  • 3 pack willow charcoal

  • 3 pack vine charcoal

  • Pencil sharpener

  • Kneaded eraser

  • Vinyl eraser

  • 18”x24” Newsprint pad

  • 11”x17” Strathmore drawing paper 400 series

  • 3 sheets toned Canson paper
     

NOTE: If you have existing supplies, they may be acceptable. For questions, please contact your instructor. Please bring at least three 8” x 10” color printed photographs or laptop images of your chosen subject matter. Images on cell phones are not recommended.
